So Why Should We Donate Blood?

In this article, we shall look at why you should donate blood, the benefits, who should donate blood, and the risks of donating blood.

According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), every two seconds, someone needs blood all over the world – showing us that many people need blood. Here are three (3) big reasons why we should donate blood, especially on 16th March 2024!

1. High Demand for Blood by Patients

Firstly, as mentioned already, at least one person needs blood every two seconds, which is a large number because many people take blood. However, we can save many people when many people embrace the idea of donating blood whenever there is a call.

In particular, there are very few cases of Negative types of donors. These only take blood from people who are type 0 Negative (0-). Therefore, we must donate our 0 Negative (0-) blood. Interestingly, 0 Negative (0-) can give all types of blood.

As a result, we are all at risk because we don’t know what can happen to us since we can be affected by various diseases that will put us and our people at risk of needing blood. So, we should donate blood as much as possible to save lives and help us with any problems that may arise sooner or later.

2. Increased Pregnancies and Childbirths

The second reason is because of increased pregnancies and childbirths. For example, as we have seen on social media, many people are getting married, especially in Kampala. So, we should expect many births and pregnancies with these increased marriages very soon.

Studies show that 3% of women need blood during pregnancy or childbirth. Therefore, we call on the general public to join us on this date and donate as much blood as possible to prevent anemia risks during pregnancy or childbirth.

3. There Is a High Blood Shortage in Uganda

Uganda is one of the countries that suffers from blood shortages. The reasons for this are many, for example, the lack of enough blood donors and other health-related problems of the Ministry of Health.

East Africa International Medical Center is community-focused and committed to providing our support in any possible way to mitigate the problem.

Then Who Should Donate Blood?

The eligible people to donate blood are those aged 16 to 60, weighing over 50 kgs. Also, their hemoglobin should be above 12 for women and above 13 for men. They should also not have any chronic illnesses or symptoms of cough, vomiting, or fever at the time.

Once blood is donated, a single unit can serve three (3) people due to its red blood cells and platelets or the blood clotting cells content.

Who Needs Blood?

People who need blood are those who are currently bleeding or have bleeding issues due to various injuries, accidents, or surgery. Other people who need blood are those who may have additional diseases such as cancer, kidney problems, and heart problems.

Furthermore, some people may need blood in large quantities if they have problems associated with anemia. However, in this case, not everyone who is anemic needs blood; they mostly need blood if their hemoglobin is less than 7, a disease not compared to any other.

How do We Use the Donated Blood?

The good thing is that blood in our bodies replicates after the donation! For example, men can donate again after every three months and four months in women. Therefore, boys can donate at least four times and girls three times in a single year.

In Uganda, we have various institutions that can come together as groups, such as schools, universities, the army, and other institutions that can come together and donate blood.

The Bottom Line

We should encourage all Ugandans and other nationalities like Somalis, Sudanese, Congolese, Rwandans, Eritreans, and Ethiopians we know or live with to come and donate blood to save lives.

Remember that the donated blood is not only yours but for your relatives and fellow citizens that you necessarily care for.

Generally, if you have health problems, come to East Africa International Medical Center branches in Kabalagala, Bunga, and Ndeeba – Kampala, Uganda.
