Yellow fever is an epidemic-prone mosquito-borne vaccine-preventable disease transmitted to humans by the bites of infected mosquitoes. The disease is a viral infection spread by a particular species of mosquito common to areas of Africa and South America. Vaccination is recommended before traveling to certain areas.

What Are the Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention of Yellow Fever?

Mild cases of yellow fever cause symptoms like fever, back pain, general body aches, fatigue, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Serious cases on the other hand may cause fatal heart, liver, and kidney conditions which make our skin and eyes turn yellow and even bleed in various parts of our body like through our nose and mouth.

However, there is no specific treatment for yellow fever disease once it exists. So, the efforts will always focus on managing symptoms and limiting complications. This implies that disease prevention is the most effective measure – vaccination being the most recommended option.

To prevent this disease, first is to clean the environment and second is by vaccination. The interesting thing is that the vaccine is available in all medical centers and is called the yellow fever vaccine.

This vaccine is effective and is being given all over the world, especially in Africa and South America. We are talking about these places because there exist many insects that can transmit the disease, unlike other parts of the world. We need to know that this vaccine is very important. For instance, a person who has not received the vaccine cannot travel to another country because such countries do not allow it to reduce risks.

Based on this point, as long as you live in Africa, you should do your best to ensure that you get the vaccination. If you are living in Kampala, Uganda, here we are; offering the service for free. Therefore, if you are leaving for a trip anywhere, you should get this vaccine ten days in advance, as you can pass it on to the areas you are visiting. So, grab the opportunity!

Who Should Go for Yellow Fever Vaccination?

Though we recommend yellow fever vaccination, it is important to understand that the vaccine is the virus itself – a drug that can protect us strongly when the virus is weak and enters our bodies. Once in our body, the vaccine protects us from potential disease, and it is usually given on the right or left upper arm to eligible people.

Due to health reasons, these groups of people are not eligible to get the yellow fever vaccine:

  • Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers.
  • Babies less than nine (9) months.
  • Anyone undergoing radiotherapy.
  • Organ transplant recipients taking immunosuppressive drugs.
  • Those who have undergone transplants within 2 years
  • Individuals aged above 60 years.
  • People who are allergic to eggs.
  • And ill patients suffering from AIDS.

However, in some cases where disease is common, children can start taking the vaccination at nine (9) months, but the best ones are between 1 and 60 years of age.

This is because for example, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers cannot take this medicine, and people with diseases such as HIV/AIDS and kidney disease cannot take this vaccine. If necessary, they should consult a doctor and follow a doctor’s prescription.

This vaccine can cause allergies in various parts of our body, and it can also cause other weak side effects but we should not give up this medicine.

So in case we see any symptoms, we should go to the doctor for advice and listen to what the doctor says. The good thing about this vaccine is that we cannot get the disease anywhere. Note that this one-time vaccine lasts for the rest of our lives.

A pregnant mother does not get this vaccine because she is carrying a baby and can pass it on to the baby through blood. If she has a trip, she should talk to a doctor. The breastfeeding mother should not get this vaccine if her baby is under one year old. Because it can go through the breast milk to the baby’s brain and cause problems.
